January Newsletter: Great Strides for Virginia teen Democrats

Thank you for your hard work. Due to the outstanding contributions of people like you, we can now say that Democrats have flipped the United States Senate, as well as won two VA special elections in HD90 and HD02!  As our new administration settles in, it is very important that we all keep up the excellent work that has allowed us hope for the future.

Legislation Updates

  1. Our Civic Engagement Bill, HB1940, to permit middle and high school students to take an excused absence once a year to participate in civic and political events has passed the Virginia House of Delegates! We had teens, like yourself, as well as teens from the VA Teenage Republicans, testify on behalf of it. Next, it will be taken up by the Senate committee on Health and Education, likely this week.
    1. Ask your legislators to co-patron this bill here!
  2. Our Voter Pre-Registration Bill has passed subcommittee with bi-partisan support! Next, it will be taken up by the full Virginia House of Delegates Privileges and Elections Committee, either this week or next.
    1. Ask your legislators to co-patron this bill here!

Chapter of the Month

  • The Teen Caucus held its first ever Chapter of the Month competition! Chapters were judged on the basis of events, participation, phone banking, and membership. This month, the McLean High School chapter won with Saehee Perez as chapter president of the month!

To declare your candidacy for the position, email VAYD President Maureen Coffey at [email protected].

Caucus-wide Meeting

The VAYD Teen Caucus will host another general membership meeting on Saturday February 6 at 12 pm. We will discuss the General Assembly Session, including our two high priority bills, 2021 VAYD Convention, and other matters.  There will also be an opportunity for open discussion of anything.
